DESCRIPTION:Join ACS\, the Jones Center\, and SPIA for a discussion with New York Times columnist\, Jamelle Bouie\, on what’s going on with democracy in Ohio – and the country. Jamelle will be joined by Professor David Niven and Jen Miller\, two experts in the ongoing fight over democracy in Ohio. \nFood will be provided.\n \n  \nPanelists\nBased in Charlottesville\, Virginia and Washington D.C.\, Jamelle Bouie is a columnist for the New York Times and political analyst for CBS News. He covers history and politics. Prior to the Times\, Jamelle was chief political correspondent for Slate magazine. And before that\, he was a staff writer at The Daily Beast and held fellowships at The American Prospect and The Nation magazine. He attended the University of Virginia\, where he graduated with a degree in political and social thought\, and government. \nJen Miller is the Executive Director of the League of Women Voters of Ohio and has over 20 years’ experience working with diverse communities to promote social justice and civic action. She earned her master’s in arts policy\, education and administration at Ohio State and holds two bachelor’s degrees in vocal music and history and ethnic studies from Capital University. Jen is a graduate of the US Department of Energy NREL Leadership Academy. She is a board member for the Ohio Debate Commission\, the Ohio History Connection\, Kids Voting Ohio\, and the Ohio Women’s Suffrage Monument Commission. Inspiring others to participate in civic engagement is her deepest passion. \nDavid Niven (Ph.D.\, Ohio State University) teaches Elections and Political Parties in the School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Cincinnati. David is the author of several books including The Politics of Injustice: The Kennedys\, The Freedom Rides and the Electoral Consequences of a Moral Compromise (University of Tennessee Press). David has written numerous studies on voter turnout and gerrymandering and has appeared as an expert witness in gerrymandering litigation. David’s political experience includes serving as the speechwriter for Ohio Governor Ted Strickland and for Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley’s campaign for president.

DESCRIPTION:Come learn about the Ohio Policy Evaluation Network (OPEN)! Hear Dr. Danielle Bessett and Dr. Stef Murawsky discuss how policy impacts reproductive health and equity in Ohio and surrounding states\, as well as potential opportunities for you to be involved in OPEN’s work. \nDr. Murawsky (they/them) is the Program & Policy Director for OPEN at the University of Cincinnati (UC). They earned their master’s degree in Women’s\, Gender\, & Sexuality Studies\, and PhD in Sociology\, at UC. Their research interests include medical sociology\, transgender studies\, the sociology of gender\, queer studies\, feminism\, and sexuality studies. They co-lead OPEN’s Policy Core. \nDr. Bessett (she/her) is a professor of sociology at the University of Cincinnati\, Ohio\, and faculty affiliate of both UC’s Women’s\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies Department and Medical Scientist Training Program.  She specializes in the sociology of medicine\, gender\, and reproduction and co-leads the Ohio Policy Evaluation Network (OPEN)\, which promotes rigorous\, interdisciplinary research to assess Ohioans’ reproductive health and well-being. \nLunch will be provided.
